INTRODUCTION.
Biomolecule are molecule that occur naturally in living organism. It include small molecule like primary and secondary metabolites and macromolecule. Biomolecule consist of mainly carbon, hydrogen with nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur and phosphorus. The classes of biomolecule include:
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Lipids
- Nucleic Acid
The function of Biomolecules
- Carbohydrates: Provide the body with fuel and energy.Aid in proper functioning of our brain, heart and nervous, digestive and immune system.Deficiency in carbohydrates cause fatigue and poor mental function.
- Protein :Provides structural support.Help in body movement. Defense against germs and infections. Can be antibodies, hormone, enzyme and contractile protein.
- Lipids: Primary purpose is energy storage. Also help in controlling the flow of material in and out of the cell by forming the plasma membrane. Lipid hormone help in mediating the communication between cells.
- Nucleic Acid: Carry the genetic information.
